The ECMWF Data Centre covers an area of 21,500m2 made up of refurbished and new buildings. Two data halls, each 1000 sqm, and two data storages, each 500 sqm, accommodating the IT technology (Supercomputers and data storage spaces) are positioned in reinforced concrete boxes in the vast Nervi pavilions named “Botti”. In addition to these structures, there are areas dedicated to electric systems which include 5 uninterruptible power supplies (Diesel Rotary UPS) to guarantee 72 hour operational continuity in the event of a power outage, and areas dedicated to the mechanical systems for the Data Centre, located in the proximity of Via Stalingrado.
1st in the world of Data Centres to have been awarded the international LEED Platinum certification for its high energy efficiency and environmental standards, accomplished through the redevelopment of an abandoned building. The facility has also achieved the highest performance in terms of seismic conditions due to its critical and strategic infrastructure functions.
Thanks to this new Data Centre, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), an international organisation currently based in Reading (UK), significantly improves its ability to process data relative to temperature and wind predictions, a major game-changer in preventing extreme natural events.
